Honed Finish- honed granite has a very smooth surface with no reflection. Honed granite will have a much flatter finish than you will see with a full polish.
Leathered Finish – Leathered or brushed finish is a somewhat new finishing style that is becoming more popular on granite.
Polished Finish- Polished finish achieves a glossy mirror-like surface on granite. A polished finish achieves a glossy mirror-like surface. A polished finish can also highlight all the unique characteristics of the stone slab you select.
Flamed Finish – This process creates a rougher, textured surface with a natural, faded appearance. Flamed granite usually produces muted colors.
Bush Hammered Finish – The bush hammered finish isn’t as common as polished, honed, and leathered, but it’s worth considering.
What is Antique Finish ?
To achieve a more textured finish, an alternative process has been developed known as ‘antiquing’ which also uses diamond brushes to achieve the desired effect.
Antiquing brushes, must run at a slow speed and with very light pressure. Increased pressure does not speed the process; it only wears the brushes faster. The polished finish, which is the most popular choice on granite, has a glossy, mirror-type finish that has some reflectivity. The antique finish has a brush, slightly textured finished. This stone is tumbled with sand, pebbles etc to create a weathered, aged finish.
An antique finish gives stone an aged appearance by replicating use and wear. Tumbling & at times acid wash is applied to surface of the stone which etches the surface of the stone. This generally dulls the color of the stone. The surface is then be brushed with mechanical wire bush to make the stone smooth and slightly restore the color.
What is Leather Finish ?
A leathered finish can make granite appear even more sophisticated and increase the stain resistance compared to a honed finish. It also tends to retain the natural color of the stone that can be washed out with a honed finish. A leathered surface usually has a soft sheen to it, but is much less shiny than the glossy look of a polished slab. Leathered granite hides fingerprints, water spots and smudges well. Leathered finish is most often used for countertops, vanities and outdoor applications.
Available only in some varieties of marble & granite, this finish gives the stone a suede look and feel. This texture is smooth and slip-resistant.
What is Flamed Finish ?
A Flamed finish is produced when an intense flame is fired at the stone, causing the surface to burst and become rough. This finish is used primarily for exteriors applications where slip-resistance is extremely important. A flamed finish cannot be applied to all stones; however, most granite and certain hard limestone are preferred. Flamed finishes work well in areas prone to moisture, such as uncovered outdoor kitchens, but they can also be used indoors.
A flamed finish is one of the most popular finishes for external use where slip resistance is a concern. It is produced by applying a high-temperature flame to the surface of the stone which creates thermal shock and causes the inherent crystals to fracture, resulting in deeply textured surface ideal for external surfaces. This finish is mainly used on granites, and will hide surface imperfections and tone variations. In stone with yellow shading such as Honey Jasper it oxidizes the iron components and enriches the 8yellow to making it pale orange/pink, this create a rich, dramatic effect in originally quiet colors.
What is brushed finish ?
The bush hammered finish isn’t as common as polished, honed, and leathered, but it’s worth considering. A bush hammered finish resembles naturally weathered rock with a lightly textured surface. Bush hammering often lightens the natural color of the stone. A brushed finish gives granite a slightly textured feel. It is not usually rough to the touch but rather is a finish of smooth and silky ridges and veins. Unlike polished or honed, a brushed finish typically has no sheen to it. Granite is available in a wide variety of unique color options.
What is horned finish ?
Grinding and sanding produces a smooth, yet not glossy finish. This is best for low maintenance, high traffic applications. Honed finishes unlike polished finishes are not reflective. The honed finish is a satin smooth surface with little light reflection.
This finish is often used on walking surfaces and other areas where heavy traffic would wear off a polished finish. Honed finishes are used in interior wall covering. It can also used on the exterior in warm environments, table tops, very light duty residential flooring, etc. A smooth matt to light shine surface finish (depending on the stone). Created using different grades of abrasives under factory conditions, honed stone is the most commonly used and recommended internal floor finish.
What is Sand Finish?
Sand finish marble Granite and Natural stone are abrasive in nature and appearance. It’s best suited for the outdoors but can still be used in interiors. Unlike the other two, this finish is very rustic and is perfect if you’re going for a natural look. It’s the most inexpensive of the three as it isn’t polished.
What is Hone finish?
Honed marble, Granite and Natural stone is more polished than the abrasive kind but still retains a matte effect. The surface has a velvety appearance making it ideal for modern and contemporary homes.
What is Sandblasted?
This is a rough, but tidy look created by applying a high pressure blast of sand to the stone’s surface. A sandblasted finish creates a finely textured surface ideal for use in traffic-ways. Applying a high-pressure jet of water mixed with sand, this treatment softens the color and characteristics of the original stone.
What is Split Face Finish?
Mainly used for cladding, this is achieved by splitting stone either by hand or by machine so that the surface exhibits a natural quarry texture. It has a flat back and uneven front surface, and creates the uneven look of protruding bricks. The surface evenness varies with the stone and not all stones can be obtained in split face finish.
